Former Workers Stadium in Avenida do Infante D. Henrique
Avenida do Infante D. Henrique meets Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro and Avenida da Praia Grande to the north and ends in Avenida de Lisboa and Praça de Ferreira do Amaral to the south. In 1932, the Portuguese administration of Macao decided to reclaim the sea area opposite the section of Rua da Praia Grande between St. Francisco Barracks and the former government office building (old Court House). In 1938, the Portuguese administration of Macao built a straight avenue on the reclaimed land, naming it Avenida do Infante D. Henrique. The current building adjacent to the Macau Portuguese School on the southern stretch of Avenida do Infante D. Henrique was a playground designated for the Kwong Tai Middle School Macau, commonly known as the “Kwong Tai Football Field.” In the late 1950s, it was expanded by the Macao Federation of Trade Unions. After completion, it was used as a public sports ground where events such as “Walk for a Million”, “Caritas Macau Charity Bazaar” and “Lunar New Year Market” were held every year. It was known by local residents as “Workers Stadium”. In 2002, the Ho’s planned to purchase the area near the Workers Stadium and the Macau Portuguese School to develop the hotel business. The Macau Portuguese School rejected the demolition plan on the grounds that there was no suitable site available to the school, while the Workers Stadium was relocated to a place near the Border Gate as a new sports pavilion. In 2004, a new hotel was built at the original site of the stadium and the southern stretch of Avenida do Infante D. Henrique has gradually developed into what it is today.
