Rua da Fonte de Inveja
Rua da Fonte de Inveja begins at Avenida de Sidónio Pais in the north and ends at the exit portal of Guia Tunnel in the south. It was already documented in the Cadastre of Public Roads and Other Places of the City of Macao published in 1925. The Portuguese term, “Fonte de Inveja”, signifies “Spring of Envy”, which refers to the mouth of a spring that used to be located at the beginning of Rua da Fonte de Inveja. It is transliterated as “I Long Hou” in Chinese.
The Flora Garden at the northern section of Rua da Fonte da Inveja was once known as the Macanese Flora, Garden of Father Vitoriano de Almeida, “Bing Tau” (commanding officer) Garden, “I Long Hou” Garden and Ho Tung Garden.
The Flora Garden was home to a magnificent mansion, the Flora Palace, which was once the residence of the governors of Macao. When it no longer served its residential purpose, the Municipal Council of Macao started to transform it into a school for children in 1918. By October 1934, the school was officially in operation and renamed into D. José de Costa Nunes Kindergarten in 1942.
