Tree Nursery
Constructed in the mid-18th century, the Camões Garden by far has the largest number and variety of age-old trees in Macao. There is a 4,500m2 tree nursery within the garden whose origin can be traced back to the time when the garden was still under the ownership of Manuel Pereira. By then, he rented his residence and the garden to the British East India Company to be its office in Macao. As the British merchants were fond of garden landscaping, they hired all the way from London a group of horticulturists to landscape the garden. These specialists planted in the garden a variety of tree species indigenous to China, Malacca, Java, Manila and India. Many of the age-old trees in the Camões Garden are actually cultivated in the tree nursery built centuries ago.
