Guia Lighthouse and Chapel of Our Lady of Guia
Located at the highest point of Guia Hill, the Guia Lighthouse was constructed in 1864, being the first modern lighthouse erected on the Chinese coastal waters. Taking advantage of its location, a mast next to the Lighthouse is used for hoisting typhoon signals to warn the public about the severity of the approaching tropical cyclone. It is classified as one of the Eight Panoramas of Macao and was inscribed into the World Heritage List in 2005.Built circa 1622 to 1637, the chapel seated adjacent to the Guia Lighthouse was consecrated to Our Lady of Guia, the patroness of sea-farers, whose statue stands on the principal altar. It has an arched ceiling with its interior walls depicted with colorful illustrations of biblical stories and figures, like John the Baptist. These religiously themed frescoes are rarely found in churches across Southern China. From the exterior, the white and yellow color-schemed chapel features an architectural style typical of Portuguese convents of the 17th century.
