Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio at Taipa
Taipa has an interesting street whose southern and northern sections are named after a governor of Macao and his son. The southern section is known as Rua Correia da Silva while the northern is Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio. The Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio begins at Rua Fernão Mendes Pinto in the northeast and ends at the intersection of Rua do Cunha and Rua Correia da Silva in the southwest. It is 275 metres in length, 4 metres by width and its southern entrance is about 7 metres wide. To the right of the northern end of the street is the site of the Iec Long Firecracker Factory. Heading south from Iec Long, the Carmo’s Fair, with a blend of Chinese and Western architectural elements, stands at the intersection of Rua do Cunha. It is formerly the Municipal Market of Taipa, built in 1886, a landmark structure in the old downtown of Taipa featuring a huge Chinese tiled-roof supported by 10 Ionic columns. By the 1970s, the marketplace fell into disuse and a new municipal market was constructed elsewhere on the island.
