Avenida da República
Located in the southeast of Macao Peninsula, the 1075 metres long Avenida da República begins at Rua da Praia do Bom Parto and runs throughout the southern tip of the city to the Rua de S. Tiago da Barra. The avenue was built on land fill, which was once the seashore at the southern foot of Penha Hill. The Portuguese administration of Macao had the sea area reclaimed to construct a road that links the Barra district with the Western Bay (Sai Van) of the Peninsula. The Avenida da República was built in 1911. It was named in commemoration of the establishment of the Portuguese Republic in 1910 following the revolution that ended the monarchial rule in Portugal.
In the early days, the Avenida da República was a dead-end road. By then, the piedmont of Penha Hill that lies between Barra district and the Western Bay (Sai Van) was scattered with huge rocks amid a dense growth of trees. The towering waves that washed over the seashore along the Hill had hindered accessibility. In 1925, the Portuguese administration of Macao blew up the massive rocks lying between Barra district and the Western Bay to make way for the avenue to reach the Barra district.
