The Lin Fong Temple and the Standing Statue of Lin Zexu
The Lin Fong Temple has been known as Ci Wu (Compassionate Protection) Palace, Tin Kei (Celestial Empress) Temple, New Leung Ma (Mazu Goddess) Temple and New Temple. When the Imperial Commissioner Lin Zexu made an inspection tour of Macao, accompanied by Deng Tingzhen, Governor-general of Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces, in the 19th year of reign of Emperor Daoguang of Qing dynasty (1839), they took residence in Lin Fong Temple during their days in the city. Lin received officials of the colonial government of Macao at the pavilion in front of the Tin Hau (Celestial Empress) Hall of the Temple. His short stay in the Temple was of tremendous historical significance.
The standing statue of Lin Zexu in front of Lin Fong Temple was erected by the Association of Piety and Charity of Lin Fong Temple in 1989. It was the work of the renowned sculptors Tang Daxi and Lin Bin. An inscribed stone screen was built and placed behind the pedestaled statue in 2008. The “Lin Zexu Memorial Museum of Macao”, seated adjacent to the statue, was constructed and managed by the Association. It was completed and opened to public on November 1997.
