Tea Shops and Chinese Teahouses
In the early days of Macao, Rua de Cinco de Outubro used to be one of the districts concentrated with tea shops. But during the 1930s to 1980s, tea industry in Macao went on a decline and so did the tea retailers. By today, only Ieng Kei Tea Shop and Va Lun Tea Shop remained in business at Rua de Cinco de Outubro.Besides tea shops, Rua de Cinco de Outubro was once home to many famous Chinese teahouses, like Luk Kwok (formerly Tak Sum), which closed down after half a century of business due to rapid social changes. Another one was Koon Nam Teahouse, opened in 1953 and terminated business in 1996. It was renowned at home and abroad for its “floor-sweeping” barbecued pork. The Dai Long Fong (formerly Tak Loi), opened in mid-20th century, is the only time honored teahouse that is still up and running in Rua de Cinco de Outubro with a nostalgic interior.
