Village of Well of Cool Water
After the village came under the administration of the colonial government in 1862, roads and houses were constructed within in areas covering today’s Rua da Roseira, Travessa dos Poços and Rua dos Curtidores. Over the past century, the village disappeared along urbanization, its roads modified and houses demolished for construction of new buildings.Dated back in history, the village had two water wells to provide drinking water, with one larger than the other. The bigger one had a square mouth built of granite, rather different from those with rounded mouth in other villages. Its water was cool and refreshing, hence the name of the village. The smaller one was known as “Carp Well”, whose water quality was said to be suitable for brewing tea. Yet its water did not taste as cool as the larger well, which was called “Well of Cool Water”.
