Sun Yat-sen
A native of Xiangshan county of Guangdong province, Sun Yat-sen was originally named Wen and had the alternative name Yat Sen. Though he used the name “Zhongshan Qiao” (Nakayama Sho) while he was campaigning for his revolutionary ideals in Japan, the Chinese usually refer him as Sun Zhongshan. During his days in Macao, he had opened the Chong Sai Pharmacy at Rua das Estalagens and set up a clinic in a building located at Senado Square. According to “Ching-Hai Tsung-Pao”, Sun used to be on duty at the clinic from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. He left Macao in 1893 and formed the Revive China Society in 1894, which was restructured into the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) in 1905 to advocate using the “Three Principles of the People” (nationalism, democracy and welfare of the people) as the core values for building a better China. On 10 October, 1911, the Wuchang Uprising was a success and Sun Yat-sen assumed as the Provisional President of the Republic of China in 1912.
