Conde de S. Januário Hospital
Completed in 1874, the Conde de S. Januário Hospital is commonly referred as “Hilltop Hospital” by the Chinese community since it is located atop the S. Januário Hill. It was initially a military hospital built in replacement of the old military hospital located next to the St. Augustine's Church and was reserved for the use of military personnel. Upon its completion, the patients and medical equipment of the old military hospital were relocated to the new one, which was later renamed into the General Government Hospital. After the 1980s, the Hospital underwent large scale reconstruction to cope with changes in the social environment, which was marked by a gradual increase of the Chinese population whose social status had risen substantially. By the time when the Hospital was reopened, it had expanded its service to cover Chinese public servants, students and senior citizens.
