Duel between Wu Kung Yi and Chan Hak Fu
Completed in June 1952, the history-steeped Estoril Swimming Pool was once the stage for a breathtaking fight of honor between Wu Kung Yi, master of Tai-chi martial arts, and Chan Hak Fu, master of White Crane Style. The duel had actually caused a great sensation in the Chinese martial art circles of Southeast Asia.At that time, the shantytown of Shek Kip Mei of Hong Kong was burnt down in a big fire leaving many of its inhabitant homeless. Under the initiative of Ho Yin (a leader of the Chinese community of Macao), a charity event hosting a duel between Chinese martial masters Wu Kung Yi and Chan Hak Fu was held at the Estoril Swimming Pool on 17th January 1954 to raise fund for the fire victims. The duel, with Ho Yin as the chief official, had drawn in over 10,000 spectators. After Chan Hak Fu was hard hit on the nose that caused much bleeding, there were more fiery exchanges with use of legs aside from fist. By the second round, when the duelers had already committed quite some fouls, the jury stopped the fighting and announced that there’s “no win, no lose and no draw” in the duel. The few minutes of fight managed to raise MOP270,000!
