Lady of Golden Flowers and Lord Va Kuong
The principal deities venerated in Sam Seng Kong Temple of Coloane are Kam Fa (Lady of Golden Flowers), Kun Iam (Goddess of Mercy) and Lord Va Kuong.Allegedly, the Lady of Golden Flowers was the daughter of a Kam family of Panyu city of China. Whenever there’s an expectant mother suffering from obstructed labor, she would be called upon to help. By the time when she reached adulthood, she drowned herself to death in a lake for she did not manage to get married. Seven days later, a piece of sandalwood carving resembling a human figure was seen floating on the lake. The people picked up the woodcarving and built the “Small Temple of Lady of Golden Flowers” for its veneration.
Lord Va Kuong, also named Numinous Officer Marshal Ma or Numinous Light of the Three-Eyed, is the tutelary god of young children. Many devotees would make Lord Va Kuong to be the divine fosterer of their son or daughter. The Feast of Lady of Golden Flowers falls on the 17th day of the 4th lunar month. But before that, the different temples would put up red written notes to remind devotees to celebrate her feast day.
