Avenida de Cinco de Outubro
The Public Library (Coloane Library) is seated along Avenida de Cinco de Outubro, a 1000 metres x 7 metres promenade named in commemoration of the Portuguese Republican Revolution of 5 October, 1910. Since then, the 5th of October is instituted as the Republican Day of Portugal.Back in the early 20th century, Taipa and Coloane islands were the sparsely populated suburbs of the Macao Peninsula. The building of the Public Library used to be the Municipal School of Coloane. The old photos show that the capital of the gigantic columns of the façade of both schools is ornamented by volutes similar to those of Greek Ionic columns, but not of classical proportion. The top of the building has an unproportionately small pediment.
