Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio and Kun Iam Tong Temple
The Kun Iam Tong Temple is located at Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio, which is a straight street (“Rua Direita” in Portuguese) named after Carlos Eugénio Correia da Silva (“Carlos Eugénio” in Portuguese). He was a Portuguese noble who was involved in the colonial administration of Macao from 1876 to 1879.The architectural layout of the small-sized Temple is styled after that of suburban temples, which is an architectural style originated from the Lingnan and central regions of China. The single-structured temple is consecrated to Kun Iam (Goddess of Mercy), a deity much venerated in Buddhist and Taoist cultures.
The Museum of Taipa and Coloane History has a rich collection of relics from the Kun Iam Tong Temple. Amongst them are the pedestal of the statue of Kun Iam, Taoist ancient works like “Xiang Hua Li Dou Scripture of Dao Cheng Temple”, “Yu Shan Jin Gong Qi Shi Scripture”, “Yu Shan Jing Gong Yan Kou Scripture” and carved woodblocks used for printing Taoist paper talismans.
