I Leng Temple and Ka Sin Tong
Though I Leng Temple (also known as Ka Sin Tong), is not a popular temple, it houses a trove of historical relics. It has a couplet inscribed with 60 Chinese characters, being one of the few couplets in Macao with a lengthy inscription. In 1987, the Municipal Council of the Islands financed the restoration of the Temple. Ka Sin Tong is one of the two temples across Macao which does not use “temple” as its designation.
The nature of Ka Sin Tong was similar to that of Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society being a charitable organization of the past dedicated to providing free medicine and consultation to public besides preaching moral standards. This explains why it did not use “temple” as its designation. Moreover, the evolution of Sam Kai Vui Kun, which has transformed from a communal place used for discussions mainly by tradesmen in the past into the Kuan Tai Temple of Macao nowadays, served as a precedent for a communal office or a professional venue to turn into a temple. And since Ka Sin Tong becomes a temple, it is consecrated to I Leng Dai Tai, which has always been venerated by philanthropic organizations, like Kiang Wu Hospital. By today, it no longer serves a charitable purpose.
