Tung Sin Tong Chinese Pharmacy
Located at no. 60 Rua de Camilo Pessanha of Macao Peninsula in a 3-storey old-style building, the Tung Sin Tong Chinese Pharmacy offers dispensary service, gratuitous Chinese medical consultation and treatment or that its patients merely pay a small fee to cover medical costs. In 1939, Kou Ho Neng, the pawn magnate of Macao at the time, proposed to set up the Pharmacy and donated 10000 yuan for the cause, which was enthusiastically supported by the Macao Governor by then, Gabriel Maurício Teixeira, and local social dignitaries, namely Fu Tak Iam, Chui Lok Chi, Chui Lok, Choi Man Hin and Sin Pek San. In addition, Kou gave away a building of his own at no. 60 Rua de Camilo Pessanha to house the Pharmacy.
In 1997, the Tung Sin Tong Chinese Pharmacy was damaged by a fire. Its reconstruction was funded through the MOP 1,000,000 donated by an overseas Chinese. By today, the Pharmacy remains as a core and integral component of the people-based social medicare services introduced by the Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society.
