Revolutionary Activities at Hou Keng Publishing House
The Hou Keng Publishing House was located at Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva, a street of 180 years old. It is 253 metres long, about 2 metres in width, with its western end connected to Rua de S. Domingos at Beco da Arruda and its eastern end adjoining Rua do Campo. In 1869, the local Portuguese government announced the designation of some streets and roads of Macao in the Bulletin of the Macao Government. The name of this street, Rua do Hospital by then was officially renamed into Rua do Cavalo Branco, which had been in use for over 80 decades. By 6 June, 1942, it was renamed into Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva.
In the old days, there was a building in front of the Capitol Theatre known as “Diu Yu Toi” (site of Ginza Plaza of today), seated at the intersecting corner of Calçada das Verdades and Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva. It was a 3-storey structure in foreign architectural style owned by the British East India Company. The building was sold to the Swire Company of Hong Kong and subsequently acquired by a wealthy merchant. By 29 July, 1910, the Macao branch of Chinese Revolutionary Alliance (Tongmenghui) rented the 2nd floor of the building to be the office of its Hou Keng Publishing House under the help of Lou I Ioc, who registered it with the local Portuguese government. It was used by the Alliance as a cover up for its revolutionary activities.
