The construction of Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, also known as “Sam Ma Lou”, was completed in 1918. It was the most bustling street in Macao Peninsula and the buildings on both sides of the street witnessed the history of Macao. Amongst them, Heng Kei Hotel (Victoria Hotel) was one of the largest hotels in Macao in the late 19th century, whose disappearance was related to an overseas Chinese magnate, Chan Fong. Allegedly, built on English funds, the hotel was the first one opened by foreigners in Macao. It is 3 storeys high, facing the sea view of Praia Grande with luxurious facilities. Many diplomats and tourists from various countries stayed at the hotel. In summer of 1891, Chan Fong and his family arrived in Macao and intended to stay at that hotel, but they were rejected from entering there by the doorkeeper for the reason of “no Chinese or dogs allowed”. Chan Fong became furious. In addition to calling the hotel manager, he immediately asked the representative of Macao Chamber of Commerce to come and announced that he bought the hotel for US$5,000. This incident quickly became a hot topic at that time, and the hotel was renamed “Sei Hoi Fong Iun”. After Chan Fong passed away, the hotel changed hands and its name was changed to “Riviera Hotel” in 1928. Riviera Hotel was closed in 1969 and dismantled in 1971. In 1974, Edifício Nam Tung was constructed at the original site, which was reconstructed to be the 25 storeys high Edifício Comercial Nam Tung in September 1998 as we see today.
