The IAM Building, which used to be the offices of Municipal Council, is one of the important cultural relics of Macao SAR Government. According to historical records, the Portuguese bought the lot in the 49th year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign (1784) of Qing dynasty and constructed a 2-storey building of baroque style. Over hundreds of years, the Municipal Council had been the heart of political administration of Portuguese in Macao. Historically, apart from the offices of Municipal Council, the building was also used for the operations of other public authorities, such as Museum, Post Office, Department of Health, Judicial Courts, Prison, etc., which had moved out afterwards. After its completion, the building had undergone numerous repairs due to typhoons and termite damage. After a major renovation in 1940, the structure and appearance of the building have been maintained as it is today.
