Pátio dos Cules

Pátio dos Cules, or patio of the coolies, is also known as the alley of dragons. It is located on a slope on one side of Calçada do Gamboa, near Pátio do Mainato. At the entrance to the patio, there is a shrine of the Earth God and a Chinese-style archway carved with the Chinese words for “alley of dragons.” The word “dragons” is commonly used to allude to the Chinese people, and here it referred to those Chinese workers gathered in Pátio dos Cules, who were waiting to be sent to remote places.
