The Yu Yuan (Garden of Pleasance) and The Cheong’s Garden

Located to the north of Estrada de Adolfo Loureiro, Yu Yuan (Garden of Pleasance) was a courtyard-style mansion built by Lou Va Sio and his son, Lou Lim Ieoc. Its principal structure has become the Lou Lim Ieoc Garden of today. The Cheong’s Garden, built by Cheong Chong Kau, used to be located in between Avenida de Sidónio Pais and Avenida do Ouvidor Arriaga.

After the Xinhai Revolution, a group of scholar-officials of China flocked to take refuge in Macao from the upheavals at home and founded the “Tou” poetry society. Members of the society, like Wang Zhaoyong, often get together at “Yu Yuan” and Cheong’s Garden for poem recitation.

During the early 1920s, the “Xue” poetry society was founded in Macao by a group of teachers headed by Feng Yinxue and Liang Yanming. The “Yu Yuan” (Garden of Pleasance) was one of the places that its members held their poetic gatherings.
