Matteo Ricci Engaged in Studies at Macau

  In 1578, Alessandro Valignano arrived to Macao as the Visitor of the Jesuit Missions in the Far East with a plan to bring over Michele Ruggieri and Matteo Ricci. By September, both of them joined the Jesuit expedition to Goa of India. At the request of Alessandro Valignano, Matteo Ricci and other Jesuits arrived to Macao en route Malacca on 7 August, 1582. Matteo Ricci was later assigned to be the first president of the Society of Jesus of Macao by Alessandro Valignano, who had founded this local branch. During his stay in Macao, Matteo Ricci resided in the St. Martin House where he learned Chinese language and read Chinese books to facilitate him to talk and preach to the locals in Chinese.
