Rua Ho Lin Vong

One of the streets running perpendicular to Rua do Cunha has quite an extraordinary name. It is named after Ho Lin Vong, a native of Shunde city of Guangdong province, who lived from the 1850s to the 1930s. He was a famous casino tycoon, an industrialist, a philanthropist and a social activist of Macao. His charity work included the founding of Kiang Wu Hospital and Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society.
The kindergarten section of Escola Fong Chong da Taipa is located along the alleyway at the end of Rua Ho Lin Vong. In the early 1960s, the workers of different trades and the townspeople in Taipa founded the “Children of Workers of Taipa Evening School”. In early 1966, the different workers and trade unions of Taipa rented three worn-out buildings at Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio and converted them into a school under the support and help from the Macao Federation of Trade Unions. During the application for setting up the school, complications occurred and resulted in the well-known incident “Motim 1-2-3”.
