Rua de S. Miguel

Completed on 20 February, 1904, Rua de S. Miguel begins at Calçada do Poço, Rua de S. Roque and Beco da Boa Vista in the south and meets Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro and Rua de Eduardo Marques in the north.
Its name is much related to Catholicism since “S. Miguel” is one of the “four archangels” according to the Bible. He has been venerated in St. Miguel Arcanjo Cemetery  (old cemetery) to guide the souls of the dead. The statue of the archangel in the Chapel of St. Miguel  features him in his legendary image – armored, holding a set of scales in his left hand for weighing the departed souls and his right hand armed. He stands over the demonic Satan like a victor.
