Travessa da Gruta

Travessa da Gruta, used to be called Beco Yau I, is located near Travessa da Palanchica and is linked to Rua da Gruta and Praça de Luís de Camões. Its name was published in the Bulletin of the Portuguese administration of Macao dated 26 July, 1869.
The street somehow has a mystery behind it. According to scholastic studies, the building numbered 11 at Beco Yau I that was owned by Ho Lin Vong, an eminent Chinese merchant of Macao during the late Qing dynasty, had once been the premises of the Macao’s branch of Xingzhonghui (Society for Regenerating China). It had subsequently become a covert meeting place for the Macao’s branch of Tongmenghui (United Allegiance Society).
