Rua do Lu Cao

Rua do Lu Cao begins in front of the building numbered 83 at Avenida de Horta e Costa and ends at Rua da Barca. Its name was announced in the “Cadastro das Vias Públicas de Macau” (Cadastre of Public Roads of Macao) published in 1905.
Lou Kau (also written as Lu Cao) was a native of Xinhui city of Guangdong province who came to Macao around 1860 to run casino business and opium trade. He became a “casino tycoon” in Macao during late Qing dynasty. In 1895, he acquired the Sa Kong area of Macao and developed it into a low-priced housing district with shops and street construction to cater for business needs and satisfy the demand for rental accommodation by the residents. Upon completion of the district, the Portuguese administration of Macao named one of the newly constructed streets within the district after Lou Kau to honor his contribution.
